Ahmed El-Sewedy emerges as Egypt’s newest billionaire as Elsewedy Electric stake nears $1.3 billion

Egyptian businessman Ahmed El-Sewedy, President and CEO of Elsewedy Electric, has seen his stake in Elsewedy Electric grow by $440.47 million in 2026 as the shares of the Cairo-based multinational cable and electrical equipment manufacturer surge on the Egyptian Exchange(EGX) by nearly 55% on the back of strong growth across its cables, engineering and digital businesses.

This surge brings his total stake value to $1.27 billion, reflecting the company’s solid performance on the Egyptian bourse. 

Ahmed El-Sewedy’s stake soars by $393 million

Ahmed El-Sewedy, a seasoned engineer and President and CEO of Elsewedy Electric, was appointed to Elsewedy Electric’s Board of Directors in 2005, drawing on over 35 years of experience in electricity and energy. 

He currently holds a 24.99% stake in Elsewedy Electric, equivalent to 534,980,391 ordinary shares, and it is worth nearly $1.3 billion. In 1986, Elsewedy led the first private cable factory in Egypt, Arab Cables Co., turning it into one of the largest worldwide providers of integrated energy solutions with over thirty production facilities spanning sixteen countries. 

Over the past 234 days, his stake has gained EGP22.86 billion ($440.47 million), marking a 54.61% increase since the start of the year. 

Elsewedy Electric exceeds $5 billion market cap

Elsewedy Electric, founded in 1938 by the El-Sewedy family, remains a dominant force in Egypt and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s electrical industry, offering cables, transformers, energy meters, and wind energy solutions that enhance regional energy infrastructure.

The company reported a modest 1.85% increase in net profit to EGP19.19 billion ($386.67 million) for the year ended Dec. 30, 2025, compared with EGP18.84 billion ($379.6 million) a year earlier.

Since the beginning of 2026, Elsewedy’s stock price has risen by 54.61% in local currency terms and 52.93% in U.S. dollar terms, from EGP75.88 ($1.509) on January 1 to EGP120.98 ($2.37), pushing its market capitalization to EGP258.8 billion ($5.09 billion), thus exceeding the $5 billion milestone.

Ahmed El-Sewedy’s stake on the Egyptian Exchange nears $1.3 billion

Ahmed’s growing stake in Elsewedy Electric has further solidified his position, as his investment is now valued at approximately $1.3 billion. El-Sewedy, an engineer with more than 35 years of experience in the electricity and energy sectors, joined Elsewedy Electric’s board in 2005 before becoming president and CEO.

His stake has increased from EGP41.86 billion ($832.25 billion) at the start of the year to EGP64.72 billion ($1.27 billion), highlighting the bright future of Egypt’s energy and cable sectors, most especially as Elswedy Electric’s market capitalisation approaches $5 billion.

Under El-Sewedy’s leadership, the company continues to expand its manufacturing presence and has developed a broader portfolio covering cables, electrical products, engineering and construction projects.
