Barceló Hotel Group, a major Spanish hospitality company, is expanding its African footprint with the opening of the Occidental Cairo Grand Museum, a 4-star property positioned opposite Egypt’s Grand Egyptian Museum and close to the pyramids of Giza.

Officially opened on September 1, 2026, the 207-room and suite hotel gives Barceló a strategic base in one of Africa’s biggest tourism markets, combining access to Cairo’s historic attractions with contemporary hospitality.

Hotel targets Cairo’s growing tourism market

The Occidental Cairo Grand Museum is designed for travelers seeking access to Egypt’s cultural landmarks while maintaining modern comfort. Its rooms feature clean lines, warm tones and a contemporary design aimed at leisure and business travelers.

The property includes a rooftop pool and bar overlooking the pyramids of Giza, creating a leisure offering built around one of Egypt’s most recognizable attractions.

For corporate travelers, the hotel has modern meeting facilities, including a versatile meeting room equipped with audiovisual technology for events of up to 60 people.

Its location opposite the Grand Egyptian Museum also positions the property as a gateway for visitors exploring ancient Egyptian history and Cairo’s wider cultural attractions.

Dining, wellness and leisure

The hotel’s food and beverage offering includes a main restaurant serving international cuisine and three bars designed for guests looking to unwind after sightseeing or business meetings.

Wellness facilities include a fitness center, spa, rooftop pool and dedicated relaxation areas, broadening the hotel’s appeal beyond traditional sightseeing stays.

Barceló builds on 90 years of tourism

Founded in 1931 by Simón Barceló, the Barceló Group began as a family business in Felanitx, Mallorca, focused on commercial and goods transport. It has since developed into a global tourism company spanning hospitality and travel, including retail and receptive operations.

The company has more than 33,000 employees and operates more than 300 hotels with over 65,000 rooms across 30 countries. Its growth has been driven by diversification, innovation and the expansion of its hospitality portfolio.

Barceló’s long history in the hotel and travel industry has shaped its focus on adapting to changing market conditions and creating experiences for travelers across the tourism sector.

The group also became the first Spanish hotel chain to have its sustainability standards endorsed by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), and has been awarded nine Michelin stars.

The Occidental Cairo Grand Museum adds another property to that international portfolio while giving Barceló a stronger presence in Egypt, where tourism remains closely tied to the country’s historic sites, cultural attractions and growing hospitality demand.
