South Africa recorded more than 7.5 million international tourist arrivals from January through August 2026, with August visits exceeding 1 million.

Arrivals in August rose 7.4% from the same month a year earlier, extending a stronger run for the tourism industry as overseas travelers return to the country.

The figures from the Department of Tourism come as the government hosts the South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit, bringing investors and tourism stakeholders together around new products, experiences and infrastructure.

Tourism growth draws investment

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said rising arrivals must generate more investment, jobs and opportunities for communities.

The government wants to expand the range of tourism products and experiences available to visitors, while increasing the industry’s contribution to businesses and the wider economy beyond international visitor spending.

“Our focus must now be on converting that demand into investment, jobs and economic opportunities,” De Lille said.

Her comments shift attention from the headline arrival figures to the economic impact of tourism, including capital spending on accommodation, attractions, transport and other infrastructure needed to support growth.

U.S. remains leading market

The United States remained South Africa’s largest overseas source market in August, accounting for 37,134 tourists.

The United Kingdom followed with 25,749 visitors, while Germany contributed 14,731. The figures highlight the importance of major long-haul markets as South Africa seeks to sustain international demand across different travel seasons.

Global ranking adds momentum

U.N. Tourism also placed South Africa among the 20 best-performing destinations globally based on first-half 2026 data from destinations that reported figures.

The result gives tourism officials additional support for efforts to attract investment and develop more experiences capable of keeping international visitors in the country longer.

The government’s investment drive is aimed at widening the economic benefits of tourism beyond arrival statistics.

New accommodation, attractions, transport links and destination projects could give businesses more ways to capture visitor spending while creating employment and opportunities for communities across South Africa.
