Jayaraman Ramesh has spent more than four decades turning an accounting career into a diversified portfolio of businesses spanning education, property, renewable energy, technology and investments, with Botho University at the centre of his commercial interests.

The Botswana accountant and entrepreneur co-founded Botho University in 1997 and has since built ownership interests across a network of private companies, while taking board positions in some of Botswana’s most established businesses.

Jayaraman Ramesh’s disclosed interests include stakes in Botho Education, Botho University, Botho Renewables and Enko-Botho, as well as property and investment companies including Acumen Property Group, Acumen Park, Botho Park and Botho Park 2 and 3.

His portfolio also extends into companies such as Scroboss, Software Consultancy Botswana, Link Zoom, Investing Wisely and Alphabet Investments, giving him exposure to businesses beyond the education group that has become his best-known venture.

Botho remains the centre of Ramesh’s business empire

Botho University, which Jayaraman Ramesh co-founded in 1997, has grown from a Botswana education venture into a regional institution operating across Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini, alongside an online learning campus. He is the co-founder and Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Botho Group, which comprises Botho University, Enko Botho Campus, a private University in Botswana.

By 2026, the university reported more than 7,000 students and nearly 400 employees.

Jayaraman Ramesh’s disclosed interest of about 19.7% in Botho University and Botho Education gives him a significant economic interest in the education platform. In comparison, his 19.72% interest in Enko-Botho extends his exposure into international schooling.

The wider education ecosystem allows Jayaraman Ramesh to participate across multiple segments of Africa’s education market, from schooling and higher education to online learning.

Property provides another layer of ownership

Jayaraman Ramesh has also built substantial exposure to property through companies linked to the Botho ecosystem.

His disclosed holdings include a 25% interest in Acumen Property Group and 24.34% in Acumen Park, alongside interests in Botho Park and related entities.

These businesses provide exposure to the physical infrastructure supporting the expansion of Botho’s education operations, including campuses and other commercial properties.

Renewable energy adds another investment pillar

Jayaraman Ramesh also owns a disclosed 19.72% interest in Botho Renewables, extending his portfolio into renewable energy and infrastructure.

The investment adds another layer to a business strategy that increasingly connects education, property and infrastructure.

Four decades of accounting and corporate governance

Before building his investment portfolio, Jayaraman Ramesh spent 36 years at Grant Thornton Botswana, where he rose to become partner, managing partner and non-executive chairman.

He later served on the Grant Thornton International board and was its Africa regional leader from 2010 to 2020.

A Fellow Chartered Accountant in Botswana and India, Ramesh also previously served as president of the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants and chaired Botswana’s Government Audit Committee.

From private companies to Botswana’s corporate boards

Ramesh has complemented his private-company interests with a growing portfolio of corporate directorships.

He serves as an independent non-executive director of Sechaba Brewery Holdings and a director of Kgalagadi Breweries. He joined the Engen Botswana board in 2022 and chairs its audit committee.

In 2025, he joined the board of New African Properties, a Botswana Stock Exchange-listed property company, adding listed real estate to his existing private property interests.

He resigned from the Letshego Africa Holdings board in March 2026 after serving since 2022.

Ownership, rather than a headline net worth

There is no sufficiently reliable public basis for assigning Ramesh a current personal net worth because most of his significant holdings are in private companies without publicly traded valuations.

What the public record does show is the architecture of his wealth: meaningful interests in education, property, renewable energy, consulting and investment companies, reinforced by decades of corporate governance experience.

From a professional accountant to a shareholder in a growing African education platform and a diversified network of private businesses, Ramesh has built his commercial position through ownership across multiple sectors rather than relying on a single operating company.
