O.R. Tambo airport expansion

O.R. Tambo International Airport expansion plans, valued at R14.5 billion ($904 million), are transforming Africa’s busiest aviation hub and strengthening South Africa’s tourism outlook. The five-year capital programme, launched in December 2024, focuses on modernising infrastructure, improving reliability and enhancing passenger experience at an airport that serves more than 21 million travellers each year.

As South Africa’s primary international gateway, O.R. Tambo plays a critical role in shaping first impressions for global visitors. The scale of the investment signals renewed confidence in the country’s tourism and aviation sectors, positioning the airport to support long-term travel growth and airline expansion.

Passenger experience upgrades
Visible improvements are already underway across high-traffic areas. These include refurbished escalators and travelators, ergonomic seating, clearer wayfinding signage and upgraded international boarding gates. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) says the upgrades are designed to reduce maintenance challenges while improving efficiency and comfort for passengers.

A major focus of the programme addresses long-standing concerns around terminal facilities. Extensive refurbishment of ablution facilities is in progress, with 90 toilets scheduled for completion by March 2026.

A second phase covering 780 additional units will begin in July 2026. New facilities feature premium finishes prioritising hygiene, durability and comfort—key factors influencing international travellers’ perceptions.

Strengthening operational reliability
Beyond passenger-facing upgrades, the expansion prioritises operational resilience. Investments include new jet fuel infrastructure, backup power generators, modernised passenger loading bridges and upgraded aviation safety systems. These improvements aim to reduce disruptions, enhance reliability and ensure uninterrupted service during peak travel periods.

For airlines and tour operators, improved reliability strengthens scheduling confidence and supports route expansion, particularly on high-demand international corridors.

Tourism and economic impact
O.R. Tambo International Airport Regional General Manager Jabu Khambule said the expansion reflects direct passenger feedback and global benchmarks. A more efficient and modern airport strengthens investor confidence, supports airline growth and reinforces South Africa’s appeal as a tourism and business destination.

Ultimately, the expansion positions South Africa’s tourism sector for sustained growth, reinforcing O.R. Tambo’s role as a vital economic and travel hub on the African continent.
