Mota-Engil Africa has secured a $207 million contract to prepare the site for a major natural gas development in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, adding another large project to its growing business in the country.

The Portuguese construction group said Monday that it had signed the contract with Italian engineering company Bonatti for preparatory works at Afungi, where Mozambique’s offshore gas resources are being developed.

The deal, valued at about €178 million( $207 million), is linked to the Area 4 gas project operated by Mozambique Rovuma Ventures (MRV), an ExxonMobil-led consortium.

Work begins immediately at Afungi

Under the 27-month contract, Mota-Engil and Bonatti will carry out extensive earthmoving and infrastructure works at the Afungi site.

The project includes construction of the second phase of the Pioneer Camp and Operational Camp, along with other supporting structures needed for activities at the development site.

The companies will also operate and maintain the camps after construction, extending their involvement beyond the initial preparatory work.

Mota-Engil said work will begin immediately, putting the project among its latest major construction activities in Mozambique.

Gas investment strengthens Mozambique pipeline

The contract gives Mota-Engil a significant addition to its order book in Mozambique as international energy companies continue to develop the country’s vast natural gas resources.

The company said the Afungi area has “great growth potential,” highlighting the importance of Cabo Delgado to its future business in Mozambique.

Mozambique has emerged as one of Africa’s major natural gas investment destinations, with large offshore discoveries attracting international energy companies and supporting demand for infrastructure around planned developments.

Mota-Engil has established a substantial presence in African infrastructure and construction, working across areas including transport, mining, energy and industrial projects.

The new Afungi contract further expands its role in Mozambique’s gas-related infrastructure.
