South African food brand Eskort is preparing for its biggest leadership transition in 22 years, appointing former Lactalis executive Herman Janse van Rensburg to steer its next phase of growth as longtime CEO Arnold Prinsloo prepares to step down in 2027.

The appointment puts an executive with experience across South Africa’s dairy industry at the helm of a 109-year-old meat producer seeking to expand its manufacturing capabilities, retail footprint and product range. Janse van Rensburg will join the business in January 2027 before formally taking over as group CEO in March.

The transition comes as Eskort looks to build on the business strengthened under Prinsloo’s leadership, with the board signalling that national expansion, product innovation and a stronger market presence will remain central to its strategy. The handover also gives the incoming chief executive two months to prepare for the role before assuming full responsibility.

Lactalis experience shapes CEO appointment

Janse van Rensburg joins Eskort from dairy company Lactalis, where he serves as general manager. During his 16 years with the business, he held several executive positions, including business unit executive and CEO.

His background in financial management, operations and executive leadership was central to the appointment, according to Gerard Braak, chairman of First Food Brands’ board. Braak said Janse van Rensburg brings the experience needed to support Eskort’s manufacturing investment, retail expansion and product development while sustaining a trusted consumer brand.

Janse van Rensburg said he was honoured to join the company at a pivotal stage, highlighting its South African heritage, manufacturing standards and evolving product range. He added that Eskort’s ability to combine resilience with adaptability would be important as the company develops its next chapter.

Prinsloo leaves after 22 years

Prinsloo’s departure marks the end of a 22-year tenure during which Eskort navigated periods of significant challenges and growth, according to Braak. The outgoing CEO will remain involved in the handover to support continuity as his successor prepares to take charge.

Braak credited Prinsloo with leaving behind a stronger and more innovative business, giving the incoming CEO a platform from which to pursue further growth.

The leadership change therefore represents both a succession milestone and an opportunity for Eskort to build on the commercial foundations established under its outgoing chief executive.

Expansion remains the priority

Eskort said it intends to maintain the strategic direction developed under Prinsloo while expanding its retail presence, introducing new products and strengthening its position in the market.

The company’s 109-year history gives it an established place in South Africa’s food industry, but its next phase will depend on how effectively it translates that heritage into continued commercial growth.

Janse van Rensburg’s appointment signals a focus on combining operational experience with product innovation as Eskort prepares for its next chapter under new leadership.
