South Africa’s Mintek is stepping up efforts to position itself among the world’s leading mineral flotation research organizations as mining companies seek better ways to recover valuable metals while lowering costs and reducing environmental impacts.

The state-owned research institution unveiled its plans during its Platinum Group Metals (PGM) Industry Day, where scientists and engineers outlined technologies designed to improve mineral processing from laboratory testing to commercial operations.

The push comes as producers across Africa and beyond face declining ore grades and rising demand for critical minerals such as platinum group metals, copper and rare earth elements used in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

Mintek says its research is focused on helping mining companies improve recovery rates, increase processing efficiency and develop practical solutions that can be deployed at operating mines.

From laboratory to mine site

“We’re aiming to become a globally recognized center of excellence in flotation research through technology partnerships and industrial implementation,” post-doctoral research fellow Dr. Mandla Chabalala said during the event.

Chabalala said the flotation team supports projects from laboratory studies through pilot testing and full-scale plant operations.

The group also develops and refines flotation reagents to suit different ore types, helping mining companies improve production and reduce processing challenges.

Expanding research beyond platinum

Mintek is extending its work beyond platinum group metals into copper, rare earth elements and new methods of recovering minerals from mine waste and tailings.

Researchers are also studying how microorganisms can improve flotation performance and help recover valuable minerals from contaminated materials.

The organization is working with mining companies, universities and research institutions to develop new technologies while improving existing processes for lower-grade ore bodies.

Chabalala said the goal is to provide practical solutions that can be adopted across the mining industry.

Founded in 1934 and based in Randburg, South Africa, Mintek is one of Africa’s leading mineral and metallurgical research organizations.

The institution provides research, technology development, analytical services and technical support to mining companies in South Africa and international markets, with a strong focus on mineral processing and sustainable mining.

Mintek said it plans to strengthen international partnerships and turn more of its research into commercial applications that help mining companies improve efficiency, increase mineral recovery and support more environmentally responsible operations.
