Dixit Joshi, South African-born executive and former Chief Financial Officer of Credit Suisse, has resigned as an independent non-executive director of Nedbank Group and Nedbank Limited, stepping down just months after his January 2026 appointment. His departure comes amid a broader leadership transition at one of South Africa’s leading lenders, following the early retirement of Chief Operating Officer Mfundo Nkuhlu.

The resignation, disclosed in compliance with JSE Listings Requirements, reflects a period of rapid governance change at Nedbank. Joshi’s decision to accept a senior executive role with a global asset manager in the Middle East underscores shifting priorities within the bank’s leadership structure.

Board reshuffle signals governance transition

Joshi’s exit has triggered immediate changes across key board committees. He previously served as Chairperson of the Group Risk and Capital Management Committee (GRCMC) and was a member of the Group Directors’ Affairs Committee and the Group Model Risk Oversight Committee.

To maintain stability, Nedbank has reappointed Rob Leith as Chairperson of the GRCMC, a role he held previously. The move is aimed at ensuring continuity in the bank’s risk oversight functions during a period of transition.

Chairman Daniel Mminele acknowledged Joshi’s contributions, emphasizing that the board remains focused on strong governance and succession planning. Further board committee changes are expected before the end of August 2026 as part of an ongoing renewal process.

Short tenure raises governance questions

Joshi joined Nedbank’s board on January 15, 2026, bringing decades of global banking experience. His appointment placed him at the center of the lender’s risk and capital oversight framework.

However, his tenure lasted less than a year, making his departure one of the more abrupt board-level exits in recent years. The timing, alongside other executive changes, highlights a broader shift within Nedbank’s leadership structure.

Global banking career spans decades

Joshi’s career spans more than 30 years across major financial institutions. He most recently served as CFO of Credit Suisse Group AG, joining its executive board in October 2022.

Before that, he spent approximately nine years at Deutsche Bank as Group Treasurer, where he played a key role in balance sheet restructuring. His experience also includes leadership roles across fixed income, derivatives, equities, and global prime finance.

He began his banking career in 1992 at Standard Bank of South Africa and later held roles at Barclays Capital before joining Deutsche Bank in 2010.

Leadership shifts reshape Nedbank outlook

Joshi’s exit comes at a pivotal time for Nedbank. The earlier announcement of Mfundo Nkuhlu’s retirement marked a significant leadership shift, signaling a broader evolution in the bank’s executive and governance structure.

While the bank has acted quickly to reinforce stability at the committee level, upcoming board changes will be closely watched for signals on strategic direction and leadership continuity.

The rapid succession of high-level exits underscores a critical phase for Nedbank as it navigates governance renewal while maintaining operational consistency in a competitive banking environment.
