Zanzibar Serena Hotel offers a distinctive take on luxury hospitality in Stone Town, where historic architecture, Swahili culture and views of the Indian Ocean shape the guest experience.

Set along Zanzibar’s historic waterfront, the property combines the character of two restored heritage buildings with the comforts of a contemporary luxury hotel, appealing to travelers seeking more than a conventional beach holiday.

A hotel rooted in history

Opened in 1997, Zanzibar Serena Hotel occupies two historic seafront buildings: an 18th-century Chinese doctor’s residence and the former 19th-century Extelcoms House.

Their restoration preserved architectural details that reflect the island’s layered history, shaped by African, Arab and international trading connections. The hotel’s setting places guests within walking distance of Stone Town’s winding streets, historic landmarks and colorful markets.

Rooms with Indian Ocean views

The hotel has 51 rooms and suites, combining whitewashed walls, high ceilings, carved wooden furniture, brass lanterns and decorative details inspired by Swahili and Arabic design.

Private balconies offer views of the ocean or the historic town, while selected seafront rooms feature four-poster beds, outdoor seating and hammocks.

Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to an executive suite, giving couples, families and leisure travelers different options. Modern conveniences, including air conditioning, private bathrooms and room service, complement the property’s traditional character.

Swahili flavors meet fine dining

Dining is central to the experience. Baharia Restaurant serves seafood and international dishes with Swahili influences, while the rooftop Terrace Seafood Restaurant offers meals against sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Masahani Bar provides cocktails, light bites and live Taarab music, bringing a distinctly Zanzibari atmosphere to evenings at the hotel.

Guests can also experience Swahili Nights by the pool, seafood barbecues and outdoor dining. The emphasis on local flavors connects the hotel’s hospitality with Zanzibar’s reputation for spices, seafood and coastal cuisine.

Wellness and island experiences

Beyond its rooms and restaurants, Zanzibar Serena Hotel features a swimming pool and Maisha spa treatments for guests seeking time to unwind.

Its location also makes it a practical base for exploring the island, with guided Stone Town tours, spice excursions, visits to Prison Island and boat trips among the available experiences.

For business travelers, the hotel offers a conference room accommodating up to 40 people, combining meeting facilities with a historic waterfront setting.

Zanzibar Serena Hotel’s appeal lies in its blend of heritage, cuisine and coastal hospitality. Rather than separating visitors from the island’s history, it places them at the center of Stone Town, where the architecture, ocean views and cultural experiences form an integral part of the stay.
