Meta expands paid subscriptions on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp in Africa

Meta Platforms is expanding its paid subscription services across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, deepening the company’s efforts to build new sources of revenue beyond digital advertising.

The rollout introduces premium features aimed at creators, small businesses and users looking for more control over how they engage on the platforms.

Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will each cost $3.99 a month, while WhatsApp Plus will launch at $2.99 monthly.

The move comes as major technology companies face slower growth in advertising sales and rising competition for users’ attention.

Across the industry, social media firms are increasingly adding subscription products as they look for steadier income and stronger user loyalty.

For Meta, the expansion also highlights Africa’s growing importance in the global digital economy.

Millions of users across the continent rely on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp daily for communication, entertainment, marketing and online business activity.

The company said the new subscriptions will focus on customization, audience engagement and creator tools rather than identity verification, which remains part of the separate Meta Verified service.

Creator tools take center stage

Instagram Plus introduces a range of features designed to help creators better understand and manage their audiences.

Subscribers will be able to see how many users replay their Stories, create expanded audience lists and keep Stories visible for longer than the standard 24-hour period.

Users will also have the option to preview Stories anonymously without appearing on viewers’ lists.

Meta said subscribers can spotlight one Story each week for additional visibility and search through Story viewers more easily.

The service also includes tools aimed at profile customization.

Users can publish posts directly to profile highlights without sharing them to followers’ feeds, while new profile fonts, custom app icons and animated “Super Heart” reactions add more personalization options.

Meta pushes deeper into subscriptions

Facebook Plus is expected to offer similar tools focused on engagement, content visibility and audience management as Meta broadens its subscription offerings across its apps.

The company has spent years relying heavily on advertising revenue, but changing privacy rules and shifts in the digital ad market have pushed large technology firms to explore paid services more aggressively.

By introducing subscription tools across its biggest platforms, Meta is betting that creators, entrepreneurs and active users will pay for features that help them stand out and reach wider audiences online.
