Kgotso Elvis Bannalotlhe is a Botswana banker and financial-services executive whose career has taken him from early treasury roles at First National Bank Botswana and Standard Chartered Bank to the leadership of BancABC, Access Bank Botswana and, currently, Letshego’s Botswana operations and regional businesses in Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho. He also serves as an independent non-executive director of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC).

Unlike entrepreneurs who build fortunes through privately owned companies, Kgotso Bannalotlhe’s rise has largely been through executive leadership at major financial institutions with influence spanning more than two decades of banking and financial-markets experience across Botswana and the wider African region.

From early treasury roles to senior banking leadership

Kgotso Bannalotlhe’s career began at First National Bank Botswana, where he spent two years in treasury-related roles. He subsequently joined Standard Chartered Bank Botswana, where he spent seven years and rose through assets-and-liabilities management and financial-markets positions. His experience later took him to Standard Chartered Tanzania, where he became Head of Global Markets and Co-Head of Wholesale Banking.

His early career is particularly notable because it was built around financial markets rather than conventional retail banking. A professional biography records his early First National Bank roles as including back-office clerk, treasury risk analyst and money-markets trader before his move to Standard Chartered. At Standard Chartered, he became involved in rates and credit trading and helped establish the bank’s fixed-income trading business in Botswana before moving to Tanzania.

Kgotso Bannalotlhe later joined Barclays Bank Botswana, where he served as Country Treasurer and Head of Markets before becoming Head of Corporate and Investment Banking. He held the latter position for four years before moving into the top executive role at BancABC.

His academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne and an Executive Master’s in Positive Leadership and Strategy from IE University in Madrid. He also completed Level 1 of the CFA programme.

Taking the BancABC helm

gotso KBannalotlhe’s career entered a new phase in August 2017 when he was appointed Managing Director of BancABC Botswana, becoming one of a growing group of local executives leading commercial banks in Botswana. At the time, he had more than 14 years of banking experience and had already held senior positions at First National Bank Botswana, Standard Chartered and Barclays.

Under his leadership, BancABC pursued an expansion strategy focused on increasing its distribution footprint, strengthening digital banking and growing its customer base. The bank’s 2018 annual report said it had relocated its Palapye branch to a larger mall and advanced service centres in Letlhakane, Kanye, Molepolole and Ghanzi, with the aim of significantly expanding its presence outside Gaborone.

One of the defining milestones of his tenure was BancABC’s return to the Botswana Stock Exchange in December 2018. Kgotso Bannalotlhe subsequently discussed the benefits of the listing in a BSE interview, describing the transaction as an important development for the bank and its growth ambitions. The bank continued to expand under his leadership. Its 2019 results showed loan advances rising 11% year on year to about P6.4 billion, while customer deposits stood at approximately P6.7 billion.

From BancABC to Access Bank Botswana

Kgotso Bannalotlhe’s next major chapter came as BancABC became part of Access Bank’s African expansion.

Access Bank acquired control of BancABC Botswana and subsequently transitioned the business into Access Bank Botswana. Bannalotlhe remained at the helm through the transformation, serving as Managing Director for roughly five and a half years from August 2017 until April 2023.

Access Bank credited him with leading the institution through several important periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic, its Botswana Stock Exchange listing and the transition from BancABC to Access Bank Botswana. The bank said his tenure helped position the business for further growth and competition in Botswana’s banking market.

His leadership during the transition gave him experience beyond running a domestic bank: he was responsible for steering an established Botswana financial institution through a change in ownership, brand and strategic direction while remaining competitive in a market dominated by major regional banking groups.

A new chapter at Letshego

In April 2023, Kgotso Bannalotlhe moved from commercial banking into inclusive finance when he joined Letshego as Country Chief Executive Officer for Letshego Botswana and Regional Executive overseeing its operations in Eswatini and Lesotho.

The role significantly broadened his regional responsibilities. Letshego’s 2024 integrated annual report states that he has direct responsibility for the Botswana business’s strategy, performance, operations, impact and governance, while also overseeing the strategy, performance, impact and governance of the group’s Eswatini and Lesotho subsidiaries. He is also a member of the Letshego Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho and Tanzania country boards.

Letshego’s current executive profile continues to list Kgotso Bannalotlhe as Country CEO for Botswana and Regional Chief Executive for Eswatini and Lesotho.

His focus at Letshego has included expanding financial access beyond traditional salaried borrowers. The Botswana business has promoted products around personal finance, micro and small entrepreneurs and affordable housing, reflecting Bannalotlhe’s stated interest in using inclusive finance to support entrepreneurship and local economic activity.

That strategy has also attracted institutional capital. In November 2024, Letshego Botswana announced a €15 million senior loan facility from Proparco to expand its inclusive-finance offering, including lending for affordable housing, small-business development and micro-agriculture activities. Bannalotlhe represented Letshego at the announcement as the company’s Botswana CEO and regional executive.

Expanding his influence into telecommunications

Bannalotlhe has also begun extending his boardroom influence beyond financial services.

In September 2025, shareholders of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation appointed him as a non-executive director. BTC subsequently listed him as an Independent Non-Executive Director and described him as a financial-services executive with more than two decades of leadership experience across banking and financial markets in Botswana and the wider African region.

The appointment gives Kgotso Bannalotlhe a seat at the board of one of Botswana’s major telecommunications companies at a time when BTC is pursuing digital transformation, operational efficiency and renewed market growth.

It also marks an evolution in his career from bank executive to broader corporate-governance figure, although there is no evidence from the sources reviewed that his BTC board position represents personal ownership of the telecommunications company.

Beyond the executive suite: investments, influence and the limits of the public record

Kgotso Bannalotlhe’s corporate interests are therefore concentrated in executive and board positions rather than a publicly disclosed portfolio of privately owned businesses.

His current corporate footprint includes Letshego’s Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho operations and a board position at BTC, while his previous leadership positions include Access Bank Botswana, BancABC Botswana and senior roles at Barclays and Standard Chartered.

From his early treasury career at First National Bank Botswana, Kgotso Bannalotlhe has progressed through Standard Chartered and Barclays to the chief executive offices of BancABC and Access Bank Botswana before taking responsibility for Letshego’s Botswana business and two regional markets.

His next chapter will be defined by how effectively he converts that experience into growth across Letshego’s Southern African operations while building a broader corporate-governance profile in Botswana.
